Bar S Arena History

The Sykes started out with a bunch of folks getting together on the weekends doing what they loved to do: riding horses and having fun doing it!

Bar S Arena was officially opened in 1995 by Jim and Zee Sykes. Jim actually started team penning in the early 1980’s, just as it was starting to be recognized as an equine sport in Texas. After a year of riding with friends on weekends, the informal get-togethers and impromptu pennings had turned into a full-time business, with more and more people joining in each week for the fun. Before long, the Bar S was hosting team penning and ranch sorting practice sessions, riding lessons, horse training, and an annual series team penning & ranch sorting competition.

About the Sykes

Jim attended school at Happy, Texas through the 10th grade. He then moved with his family to Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1953 where he graduated from high school in 1955. Jim joined the US Navy and studied electronics. He served aboard the USS Ponchatoula to discharge date in 1959. He then attended Texas Extension Service heavy equipment operator school at Texas A & M and was employed by Austin Paving Co. He then worked for Varo, Geotech & Unitron as electronic tech & dept. manager, then by Calart Flower Co. as the Dallas plant manager. Jim then left Calart to become self employed as Jimsco upholstery and owned Rosehill (J2Z) Stables (70 stalls) for 25 plus years. In January, 1995 Jim purchased their present arena.

Zee graduated from Happy High School & attended Wayland Baptist College. While at Wayland, she played basketball for the Flying Queens B Team. Zee was active in the Youth River Ministry for 19 years at the First Baptist Church in Plainview, Texas where she also served as Youth Ministry Secretary. She competed in local cutting associations for several years. Zee loves the sport of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting and is currently very active in these sports.
